Vote for November's Well-Read Weekend
Supporters of the Well-Read Weekend get to vote for each month's classic!
For November, we will be choosing between two short plays.
These plays were written within 20 years of each other and straddle the turn of the 20th century. You are likely familiar with both stories, but can you say that you’ve read them? (For those of you who answer “yes”, perhaps it’s time for a reread.)
Let’s see our two contenders!
Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw
Drawn from Ancient Greek mythology and inspiring the film adaptation My Fair Lady, Pygmalion centers on a poor flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, and the linguist, Henry Higgins, who claims he can make her pass as a duchess.
The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde
This Victorian satirical comedy centers on two men, Jack and Algernon, leading double lives, each going by the name Ernest, while trying to avoid social expectations and to win the hearts of two women.
